Strongman, Without the Equipment!?

Jay Sylva – Find A Way Fitness

I train strongman, but I don’t have any strongman equipment. How do I do it? How can you do it? Its easy to train like a strongman with the equipment from your standard local gym. All gyms are different and carry various items, but don’t have any strongman equipment. That should not detour you from becoming a great strongman athlete! I’ll run you through how I “Find A Way” to train strongman when I don’t have access to the right equipment. Majority of these workouts act as substitutes to the actual thing but transfer very well. “Four strongman exercises can easily be done in any gym–tractor tire flips, the circus dumbbell lift, the farmer’s walk, and the crucifix hold. A heavy bag is a decent replacement for a tire; the circus dumbbell has a close cousin in the push press, and both the farmer’s walk and crucifix hold only require dumbbbells [sic]” (Poundstone).

So, I guess I should explain what strongman is. Explained in simple terms, the goal is usually to lift heavy, and do it fast. It actually takes a lot more endurance and strength than most think. The athletes in this sport are scored by time, reps, or maximum weight lifted. Unfortunately, people usually assume it’s all strictly power mixed with poor form. Strongman has grown to become a large sport and is only getting more popular. The sport of strongman has many levels and sometimes includes weight classes, meaning it’s a sport open to lots of people. You can be male or female, weigh 145lbs or 355lbs, be an experienced lifter or even just a hobbyist that enjoys going to the gym. Somewhere there is a competition for you.

A strongman competition can include various events, sometimes some you may have never even seen before. This means that every contest is different. Because of this variation in events, everybody has their own strengths, and this can level out the playing field. A small strongman event will usually last a few hours with 4-5 events. The events have an average number around 12-15 competitors. Bigger event can go for 2-3 days and have many more competitors. There are also strongwomen events. These usually happen alongside the men’s shows. Here’s the best part, you don’t have to compete to have fun!

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for. How to train strongman with your standard gym equipment. Atlas Stones are very popular in strongman. There are many ways to simulate picking up one of these heavy balls of concrete. My favorite way to do this is with Zercher Deadlifts. The bar starts on the ground, you pick the weight up while holding the bar inside the bend of your arms. As demonstrated in the photos. While the goal is to lift heavy, you want to be careful. This puts a lot of stress on your back, it’s better to hurt your ego than it is to injure your body. To practice the form of lifting an Atlas Stone, I will use the heaviest medicine ball I can use. I then lift it as if it was an actual stone and the goal was to lift it over a bar around chest height shown in a couple photos.

The deadlift must be in your arsenal if you want to participate in strongman. Everybody knows what the deadlift is. Weight on the ground that you pick up from your shins to your hips. The gym I go to has this amazing machine that reminds me of the form used to participate in the car deadlift, only it is nowhere near the weight of any vehicle. The car deadlift is a metal frame that a vehicle can drive onto giving the participant grips to deadlift one side of a car.

This is one of my favorite events. The overhead dumbbell press, this is tested in most competitions by pressing the highest amount of weight you can. The lift starts from the ground, you can bring it up to your shoulder with both hands. When you get it positioned correctly and clear the opposite hand you must press it with one hand only. I like to rest the dumbbell on my trapezius muscle, this is the meaty part between the shoulder and neck closer to your back. Circus dumbbells are used when performing this in competition, but most gyms only have standard dumbbells to use which is perfectly okay to use. This is what I am using in the photos demonstrated.

Some competitions like to include an event that involves pulling a heavy vehicle. I don’t have a vehicle to use in my workout plan, so I use the pulley row machine to simulate this. I put on heavy weight and do 15-20 reps as fast as possible in order to train that situation. The movement involves more than just arm movement though. You are also using the power in your legs. The photos show that at the end of the rep my legs are extended to help pull the weight towards me.

Finally, strongman need cardio. But strongman cardio is different from standard cardio. This involves farmers walks, goblet walks, keg carries simulated with dumbbells with heavy weight for 20-30 yards. Farmers walks can be done with dumbbells to simulate frame carries as well. For goblet walks you hold a dumbbell as if you were going to do a goblet squat, but instead you are walking as fast as you can with it. Keg carries is what is sounds like, you use a dumbbell and hold it as if it was a keg.

I have an Instagram page @FindAWayFit where I post strongman content, as well as my own strongman experiences that I highly suggest you to follow for more strongman related content. Instagram is also a platform that you can use to contact me! I’d love to here about your start in strongman and would love to help you with a strongman-based workout plan written specifically for you. Thank you for reading, Find A Way!

Understanding Anxiety and Depression

Mya Houdyshell

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety and depression is the most common mental illness affecting 40 million people in the United States each year. These mental illness affects so many people throughout the world. It is a constant battle that majority of people have to face each and every day. In this blog post, I will address signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety and multiple ways that have helped me with my anxiety and depression, and how to help someone who you know that has one of these diseases.

Signs of Anxiety

  • Feeling restless, keyed up, or on edge
  • Increased heart rate
  • Muscle tension, shaking or trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Easily Irritable
  • Trouble falling asleep

Above, are a few different signs of anxiety. Majority of the time anxiety affects people differently so if you do know someone that has anxiety then you can help them by getting them professional care.

Signs of Depression

  • Feeling sad, persistent low mood, hopeless, emptiness, or worthless
  • Memory problems
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Anxiety
  • Self-harm
  • Substance abuse and addiction (heavy drinking and drug use)
  • Memory problems
  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Persistent headaches, or other pain

These signs are very common for a college student but are also serve signs of depression. If you feel that you have any of these symptoms the first thing to do is to take an online test of depression and if you score high enough then go seek professional help.

If you have any of the signs and symptoms above, then you need to take action in the steps below. I understand that it is hard to accept that you have one of these diseases but the best thing to do is to follow the steps below:

1.Accept That You Have One of These Mental Illnesses

The first step to help yourself deal with this disease, is to understand that you have it. A lot of people like to be in denial that they even have the disease. If you do nothing, it will only get worse. That is a terrible idea. It is okay to not be okay, and it is definitely okay to need help. Accepting that you have this disease is not going to be something that is easy, it is going to take a lot of strength, but it is better to accept instead of denying it because that will only make coping with it even harder.

2. Reach Out and Get Help

This step can be very challenging for a lot of people. A lot of people find it very difficult to tell someone that they are not perfect. The sad truth is that no one is perfect, and chances are if you reach out to a close friend or family member, they will know how to help you. Most of the time when you reach out to someone, they either have it or know of someone that has it and can help you. Plus, they can help you with the next steps to take.

3. Seek Professional Care

Once you get help from someone else the best thing to do next is get professional help by a doctor or therapist. Both of these will help you be able to cope with your disease. A doctor can give you medication and a therapist can help you be able to deal with your mental illness. My therapist helped me be able to recognize when my anxiety is coming on then gave me healthy coping mechanisms. The best way that I deal with my anxiety when I catch myself becoming anxious is, I count backwards from 100 by 3. This is actually really complicated and makes me think about counting and my breathing. This calms me down to make a rational choice instead of doing something I will regret. Although this helps me with my disease, it may not with someone else.

Having one of these mental disorders is not easy, it is a constant battle every single day. From getting out of bed to doing the dishes. It is something that you have to learn how to cope with using healthy coping mechanisms. This is not something that should be taken as a joke. These mental illnesses are very serious and can save someone’s life. If you know someone with one of these diseases, then the best way to help them is to not treat them like they are injured. If you want to help someone find ways to help them cope with their disease. Do NOT ignore it, allow them to talk to you but when they are ready. Do not push them to talk because that will only push them away. Let them know that you are a safe place for them to come to, have open arms waiting for them.

I hope this helped everyone understand the importance of this disease and what some signs and symptoms are of both diseases. I also I hope this blog helped everyone understand how to help someone with one of these mental disorders! Thank you for reading and you can always contact me if you need help 🙂

Capturing the Audience

Jared Bush

                                                              Blog Post

There’s more to a blog than just creating it. In fact, that’s just part of the battle. The most important part of the blog is making your sure it’s appealing to your audience. You want the people to keep coming back for more. Isn’t that one of the main reasons you make a blog in the first place? Without an intrigued audience, your blog will not be successful.

To begin, before you try to entertain the audience, you must first get to understand the audience. You must figure out who your target audience is. By that, I mean what type of people is your blog directed towards, whether it be teenagers, men, or women, you must have an idea of what type of people you’re trying to reel in to your blog. For example, if your readers are people that are looking for new gym workouts, you probably won’t need to provide them information about what gym they should go to, considering that they probably already go, but more so the types of specific workouts they should do that helps build muscle faster. You need to consider the audiences interests when you’re coming up with a topic for your blog. Finding something that resonates with the audience is essential. There must be something that makes people want to continue coming back to your blog. In a sense, you almost want to make that blog addicting. You must be specific and have clear-cut points. Your information in your blog must be unique and there should be something stands out from other blogs. Continue asking yourself “How can my blog be different?”

Furthermore, another important factor in grabbing the audience’s attention is having a visually appealing blog. This is something that can tend to get overlooked. You may have great information on your blog but the reader could be swayed away due to the fact that you page is dull and boring. You may want to add color and have images that relate to what your blog is about. Although, it’s not just pictures or color that can make a blog post appealing. You should have a catchy title, information should be organized, and everything should be proofread and edited. People may question the credibility of your blog if there are punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors all over the place. You should also organize the blog into sections, subheadings, or whatever you feel is best. The length under each section in your blog should not be overwhelmingly long either. No reader wants to click on a blog and see this super lengthy explanation on something that could’ve been explained in a few sentences. They’re more than likely not to read the whole thing. If you get to your main points quickly in your blog post then it will be a lot easier on the reader’s eyes. Each section must be consistent, this makes the blog post a lot easier to follow along and more professional. The appearance of your blog can be just as important as the material that’s on it.

Continuing, another factor that can get overlooked is how you customize your blog’s theme. For instance, if your blog is about playing basketball, you might want your background picture to be gym or an outside basketball court. You just need to make sure everything in the blog coincides with each other. You don’t want your blog to be about sneakers and you have an animal as your background picture. The customization part of the blog is also where you really want to use your creativity. Two things your blog should also contain are a logo and an about page. The logo can be your name, business, or anything you feel is comfortable that represents your blog. The logo helps to remind readers who or what is putting out the content. How you decide on your logo, is solely up to you. The about page is for you to describe yourself or your business or even both at the same time. You should think of the about page as the place where your readers can get to know you.

As you can see, having an audience that is consistently tuned in to your blog is a key component in having a successful blog. Without an audience, your blog wouldn’t be able to expand and grow. It takes creativity, organization, consistency, and more to create an intriguing blog, but it can be done with preparation and an idea that can grab people’s attention. So remember, if there’s no audience, then there’s no blog.

Not your mama’s No-Bake Cookies

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 1 minute
Total Time( all steps combined): 20 minutes

Do you know how I know that this is not your mama’s no-bake cookie recipe? Because it is my mama’s! Hands down, this is the best version of no-bake cookies that exists on the planet (In my humble opinion). I’m not saying that there isn’t another mother out there that has put this unique spin on this recipe, that is very possible. (If there happens to be another mother who has, I’d be glad to meet her and try her cookies) What I am saying is my mama modified the original recipe herself when I was probably 5-6 years old and we’ve been making them like this ever since. It is said that learning a specific recipe or general cooking skills at a young age (preferably 12 years old or younger) helps one to better retain the recipe and the skills needed to be successful. I know this to be a fact because I have this recipe memorized so well that I don’t use a recipe card for the ingredients or the measurements and I know the in’s and out’s of the whole process. I can definitely thank my mama for this because she taught me at such a young age and let me practice anytime I wanted!
Before you begin making the cookies you will need to gather all the ingredients, a big pot for the stove top( also a stove), a timer, wax paper and a big spoon for stirring and scooping out the cookies onto the wax paper. Make sure to have around 3 feet of counter-top cleared off, role out 3 feet of wax paper flat on the counter-top to put the cookies on after cooking them. Grab one or two pot holders just in case you need them throughout the process, the ingredients have to be boiled so it can get very hot.

Ingredients:
1 stick of butter or margarine
½ cup of milk
2 cups of white (granulated) sugar
¾ bag of chocolate chips ( around 1 ½ cups)
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup of peanut butter (crunchy or smooth, we use crunchy)
3 cups of quick-oats

How to make Not your mama’s No-Bake Cookies
Okay, now that you are all set up, you are ready to begin making your cookies! To start with you throw one stick of butter into the pot and turn the burner on to medium heat. Let the butter begin to melt for 20-30 seconds, then you want to add milk. I like to add these two ingredients first so that they will begin to heat up together, I think it helps the process go smoother. Next, you will add the sugar and mix it well with the butter and milk. By this point the butter will be about half melted and you will have a thick, sugary mixture. I like to let the mixture heat up for 30 seconds or so, this allows the butter to continue melting and the sugar to begin to dissolve. This next step is the “money maker” or the “secret sauce”, if you will. In most recipes you would add cocoa powder at this step but in my mama’s recipe you add milk chocolate chips (while adding the chocolate chips try not to pour them into your mouth, funnel style, but if you slip up and let that happen-I WILL NOT TELL). Okay, now that you have added the chocolate chips you will stir this mixture up until everything is completely melted and the sugar is fully dissolved. Now you have a sweet, sweet chocolate sauce that is very hard not to drink straight from the pot. At this point you have two choices, drink sweet sauce straight from the pot (but maybe you shouldn’t because you possibly just inhaled half the bag of chips), or continue cooking because you obviously would still love to have cookies at the end of this. If you chose the latter, please read on!
At this point your first 4 ingredients are ready to start boiling, go ahead and turn up the heat to medium-high or high, and stir continuously. The mixture will start boiling after a couple minutes, once it does you may want to turn down the heat just a smidgen so it doesn’t get too hot to stir. Set your timer to 1 minute and start it. Stir the boiling ingredients continuously the entire minute. After the minute remove the pot from the heat completely. Now you will add the vanilla, peanut butter and quick-oats and stir, stir, stir until you have a thick no-bake cookie mixture. After the stirring is done it is time to scoop little piles of sweet goodness onto the wax paper. The size of the piles you make are completely up to you, if you want fewer-bigger cookies, take bigger scoops. If you want many little bite-size nuggets, take small scoops. After you get done scooping your cookies the best and final step is yet to be done, scraping the pan! Enjoy!
The beauty of this recipe is that it is very difficult to goof up. If the cookies turn out too soft all you have to do is put them in the fridge for an hour or so, if they come out to dry you can crumble them up and use them for ice cream topping (yes, I am speaking from experience about the ice cream topping and no, you will not be disappointed). I hope you enjoy making this recipe as much as me and my family. It is possible that this recipe is floating around in cyber-blog-recipe-world already, our family does not claim this as our property what-so ever. If you choose to adopt this recipe as your own the only thing I beg of you is to share it/pass it down!

How to Create a Blog Post

There are many steps to writing a blog, before the writing ever starts some research has to be done. The research is about finding out who the target audience is, which mostly consists of the age and interests of the audience. After the research is gathered you want to customize the blogs theme. The theme should align with the topic and content of the blog and be attractive to the target audience.

The introduction is a very important part of the blog, this is part of the blog that grabs the reader’s attention to make them want to read more. Start with a catchy introduction, if it does not sound interesting to you, it most likely will not sound interesting to someone else either. The title is also something that is very important towards grabbing the reader’s attention. You want a title that is not overwhelming or general but also grabs the reader’s eye.

Before you begin writing your blog posts you should organize the information in an outline. It can be organized by sections, lists, tips, or whatever you feel is most convenient. Most importantly, it should be easy for the reader to follow and understand. After you’ve completed your outline, you can begin writing your blog post. You should use your outline as your guide and be able to expand on all of your ideas in the outline. Write about what you already know and then gather additional information that relates to your blog. Then, you should edit and proofread your post. This is something that shouldn’t be forgotten about or overlooked. Make sure your grammar, punctuation, and spelling are free from error and your blog is formatted correctly.

The end of your blog post should have a call to action (CTA). What are you trying to have your audience do, whether it be clicking an affiliate link, buy a product, subscribe to your blog, ect. A CTA is usually meant to benefit the and marketer.

Blogs have a goal of reaching as wide of an audience possible. The writer needs search engine optimization. This uses techniques to bring traffic across your page. If you can, you want to make your URL shorter and use keywords.

After writing your blog, you should rewrite your title and make it “catchy”. Titles should not be any longer than 65 characters. Start with your working title, and make it appealing by using strong language, alliteration, and another literary tactics. Using these strategies will help you create the best blog post!
